Homemade Pizza Sauce – 5 minutes
A pizza sauce is similar to a tomato sauce, but thicker and more concentrated in flavors. So, you can get more out of the little that you use. You can make a homemade pizza sauce in 5 minutes with just 10 ingredients, of which most are pantry staples.

Ever since I posted my Margherita pizza, I’ve been asked about the pizza sauce I used. Luckily, I was planning to share the recipe with you anyways.
I am not a big fan of canned stuff, as you may have seen from most of my posts. I love fresh tomatoes and I even make this popular tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes. Of course, there are moments when time is limited and you need a quick fix. Times when your kids come home with friends and say ‘mama make pizza.’
About this sauce
The sauce does use canned tomatoes and tomato paste for a concentrated flavor. The rest of the ingredients are pantry staples and almost everything can be omitted or substituted. So, it’s a very versatile sauce.
While you can use the sauce without cooking, I highly recommend those three minutes on the stovetop. It helps reduce all that excess moisture. You want a nice thick pizza sauce, don’t you?

Ingredients and substitutes
- Tomatoes – We need to use canned for this recipe because the fresh tomatoes will have too much moisture and need more cooking time. If fresh tomatoes are all you have, then you need to use my tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes.
- Tomato paste – Adds a nice color and thickness to the sauce.
- Italian seasoning – I like having this on hand. It is a nice mix of dried herbs like oregano, parsley, thyme, etc.
- Onion – I love the flavor of Spanish onions in my tomato sauce.
- Garlic – I’m using fresh, but you can also use 1/4 tsp garlic powder.
- Basil – I love the flavor of fresh basil, but you can also use 1/2 tsp of dried basil.

Step by step instructions
- Add all ingredients in a blender until smooth.
- Pour into a saucepan and cook on high for 2 minutes.
- You want the excess moisture to evaporate (see video).
- Let cool. Then, use it on your favorite pizza.
Frequently asked questions
This pizza sauce will keep in the fridge for up to a week.
Spaghetti sauce has too much moisture, which makes the pizza very soggy. This thick pizza sauce will not make the pizza soggy.
No, fresh tomatoes have too much moisture in them that needs to be evaporated before you can use it for this pizza sauce. If you have only fresh tomatoes on hand, I highly recommend using my tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes. You can also use it as a pizza sauce.
Absolutely. This batch is good for 2 x 12-inch pizzas. You can see me use it in my homemade pizza dough recipe or Margherita pizza recipe. You can multiply this recipe twice or three times. Works perfectly every single time.
Yes, pizza sauce needs to be thick, but not so thick that it coats like a paste. You want some moisture in there or your pizza crust will taste dry. See video below for right consistency.
